Serenity is Joss Whedon’s follow up to his criminally underrated TV series “Firefly”. Although the sci-fi western was cancelled after only 1 season, it developed a cult like following soon after. The boost in interest and DVD sales eventually led to the cast and crew returning for this brief cinematic revival. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Serenity…
Pros: Firstly, Joss Whedon’s dialogue combined with Nathan Fillion’s comedic timing is endlessly entertaining. Additionally charming are the quirky speech patterns used throughout, which helps flesh out this world and keep it interesting. Secondly, Chiwetel Ejiofor gives a particularly menacing performance as the Alliance Operative here, in one of his earlier roles . Lastly, my favorite part of Serenity is how the plot culminates in an absolutely exhilarating battle scene at the end. Overall, the cast and crew does an amazing job reprising their Firefly roles.
Cons: Although I love how this movie unfolds, it’s characters are cliché and the plot is predictable. And While I appreciate the inclusion of the original Firefly characters, it feels like there isn’t enough screen time to go around! For instance, the two love stories that are briefly alluded to feel tacked on with minimal impact to the story. I’m not suggesting this 2 hour movie be any longer, but it’s apparent that trying to wrap up an entire TV series in one movie is no easy task.
I give Serenity a solid A. This sci-fi adventure hits all the right notes while giving it’s loyal fanbase the closure they deserve. I recommend watching Firefly first, but it is by no means required to enjoy this film. Happy Watching!
