Moxie (2021)

Moxie Movie

Moxie is an empowering coming of age story about a shy teenager who anonymously establishes a feminist club at her school. After being rated “Most Obedient” by the dirtbags of Rockport High, Vivian finds her voice in a big way. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Moxie…

Pros: Amy Poehler does a commendable job directing this off beat comedy. Watching the progression of Vivian’s seed of an idea bloom into a unified feminist movement is both inspirational and uplifting. I appreciate that the movie isn’t afraid to tackle toxic masculinity head on, but also show respectable guys as well. Overall, Moxie feels well balanced and has a strong message that can resonate with anyone.

Cons: The acting is mostly so-so, but at least the kids seem to be a believable high school age. Secondly, the principal is a terribly awful character, who merely gives Vivian an excuse to rebel against authority. I wish they found a way to give the principal, her much deserved comeuppance, but that doesn’t happen. Finally, this movie has just about every high school trope imaginable. There’s painfully obnoxious jocks, a hypocritical dress code, the falling out and forgiveness of a best friend, and at the center of it all is a young outcast, oozing with potential. It makes for a compelling story, but overall it is very predictable.

I give Moxie a B. It’s an accurate representation of high school hormones, and has a positive message about about finding you passion standing up for it. If you’re looking for a charming and inclusive comedy, look no further. Happy Watching!
