My Octopus Teacher is an Oscar winning documentary about a curious little octopus living in a South African kelp forest! And although it may sound like a simple subject, I promise you, it is anything but. Let’s consider the pros and cons of My Octopus Teacher…
Pros: Firstly, the cinematography in this underwater exposé is stunning, rivaling that of Planet Earth. Craig Foster does an amazing job stitching his footage together in a way that shows the grace of the wild. Secondly, the score is beautiful and chimes in at the most emotionally impactful moments. A whimsical melody behind an octopus playfully dancing with fish will forever make me smile! Last and certainly not least is the octopus itself. I love that Craig showed the octopus’ personality and recognized how truly complex these creatures are.
Cons: As great as this documentary is, it is gut wrenchingly sad. Craig Foster forms a special connection with this creature, only to watch it become increasingly vulnerable and eventually wither away. I’m holding back tears just thinking about that poor octopus’ devastating conclusion, but it is the circle of life. Craig redeems this sad ending, by finally feeling connected to the entire kelp forest. A connection and comfortability that could not have been achieved without the help of My Teacher Octopus.
I give My Octopus Teacher a solid A. It’s a touching story that will resonate with anyone who’s ever formed a strong bond with an animal. Good luck holding back both happy and sad tears! Happy Watching!
