Army of the Dead (2021)

Army of the Dead is a Netflix Original written and directed by the one and only Zack Snyder. The story follows a group of mercenaries who are induced into a comically dangerous heist, after a sudden zombie outbreak. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Army of the Dead..

Pros: Firstly, the cinematography in this film is beautiful with several notably stunning set pieces. Say what you will about Zack Snyder, but he has an excellent eye for what encompasses an enthralling shot. Lastly, the special and practical effects are also great, illustrated best by the hauntingly real main zombie.

Cons: Firstly, the story tries to be different, but the many tone shifts are jarring to say the least. One moment you’re in a shoot ’em up action flick, then next you’re in a B horror comedy. Overall, the story is messy, seemingly making up rules as it goes. Everything doesn’t have to be exposited with a slow motion flashback (which this film has), but understanding that there are zombies with varying levels of intelligence, might be worth knowing before crossing a desert full of them. Another gripe is how zombie bites inconsistently affect characters based on how important they are. In the beginning, characters are zombified within seconds of being bitten. At the end, a man walks for miles, charters a plane to Mexico and doesn’t start to show signs of zombification until he’s mid-air. Shamelessly setting up what will surely be an equally underwhelming sequel.

I give Army of the Dead a B-. My expectations for this movie were unbelievably low and somehow I still came away feeling disappointed. However, if you’re down for a shut-your-brain-off action flick, this might be a good choice for you! Happy Watching!
