A Quiet Place is a horror film about a family forced to live in silence, due to lurking monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing! John Krasinski stars alongside Emily Blunt in this thrilling post apocalyptic story. Let’s consider the pros and cons of A Quiet Place…
Pros: The two things this movie nails are sound design and showing not telling. Firstly, the sound and score are used sparingly, but just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. Secondly, because silence is the key to survival, most of the exposition is shown through context clues, not dialogue. Lastly, is the tiny cast, who are all phenomenal! Even with a short runtime and minimal dialogue, each member of the Abbott family is portrayed purposefully. Especially Emily Blunt, who does a lot of the dramatic heavy lifting and pulls it off exceptionally well!
Cons: There aren’t many criticisms I can levy at this movie, but I understand why it’s quiet concept can be divisive. There’s a noticeable absence of dialogue, and because the characters communicate via sign language, this isn’t a movie you can passively watch. I personally liked being glued to the screen, keeping my ears peeled for the slightest sound, but it’s admittedly not for everyone.
I give A Quiet Place an A-. It’s a well executed sci-fi horror movie overall, and a refreshingly unique concept. Put your phone away, grab your favorite snack and try not to make a sound! Happy Watching!
