Gunpower Milkshake is a Netflix Original and, as it’s name suggests, an unapologetically offbeat action flick. Karen Gillan stars as Sam, a skilled assassin, forced to go rogue after multiple hitjobs go awry. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Gunpowder Milkshake…
Pros: Firstly, this movie has a vibrant and stylish aesthetic that pops off the screen! Whether it’s the outfits, accessories, cars, or set pieces, the visuals are engaging but not overpowering. Secondly, I love how the women in this movie are portrayed as badass, intelligent, and capable fighters. Because although there are some lulls, the fight scenes are extremely well shot and choreographed!
Cons: Many people will rightfully label Gunpowder Milkshake as the female John Wick. And although the similarities are undeniable, it’s when this movie tries to be original, that it struggles even more. For instance, the tone shifts from life or death stakes to fighting with flaccid arms against clumsy henchmen high on laughing gas. It’s a humorous visual, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also jarring unless you’re a fan of slapstick comedy on top of brutal violence. This could just as easily be why someone else loves this movie, but it didn’t work for me. Lastly is the overuse of slow motion and music to punctuate every action scene. It works well in a few instances, such as the bowling alley and diner shootout, but by the end, it veers off into music video territory.
I give Gunpowder Milkshake a B-. This is definitely a “turn your brain off” kind of movie, but if you temper your expectations, you might come away really liking it. Happy Watching!
