Apex Legends is a free-to-play shooter in which 20 teams are dropped onto a shrinking map until only one is left standing! This is a battle royale style game, similar to Fortnite and PUBG, but with a few key differences. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Apex Legends…
Pros: Firstly, the legend roster has grown from 8 characters to 18 in less than 3 years! This is a reassuring sign for players, because it shows that the game developers are still highly involved and continuously updating the game. Secondly, depending on your gameplay style, Apex Legends has incredibly high replay value. Each legend has unique skills and abilities, but it’s up to you to decide whether you want to hone your skills with one character, or alternate between several! Lastly and possibly most importantly, is that there is no pay to win option. This allows you to enter each match with the same base stats as your teammates and opponents. There are options to pay for character and weapon skins, but these are aesthetic upgrades and don’t confer any advantages to the player.
Cons: Although there’s a lot of fun to be had in each game mode, at the end of the day this is just a battle-royale with teams of two or three. There is no plot or story to be found, aside from kill or be killed. Recently “Arenas” were added to provide a team deathmatch option, but it still doesn’t address the lack of single player content. Of course you can always jump into matchmaking solo, but I acknowledge it’s not for everyone.
I give Apex Legends an A-. It’s a solid all-around shooter, with thrilling mechanics and captivating gameplay! Grab a friend, or two, and I’ll see you in the ring! Happy Gaming!
