The Last Duel is based on the chilling true story of Knight Jean de Carrouges, who challenges squire Jacques Le Gris to a duel over the assault of his wife, Lady Marguerite. Ridley Scott adapted the screenplay from Eric Jager’s novel of the same name. Let’s consider the pros and cons of The Last Duel…
Pros: Firstly, the cast is stacked with talented actors, including Matt Damon and Adam Driver who star opposite each other. However, this is Jodie Comer’s movie through and through, and she is especially fantastic in her role as Lady Marguerite. Secondly, is the direction from Ridley Scott. I think it’s smart that he not only splits the film into separate sections, but also shows the same events from different perspectives. Lastly, the “Duel” at the climax is shot marvelously and choreographed to perfection.
Cons: Firstly, I think it’s important to acknowledge that the entire plot revolves around a sexual assault. This is a trigger for many, and I completely understand if that makes the movie unwatchable for some. It’s too bad too, because Lady Marguerite, played by Jodie Comer, originally recollects the traumatic event in a heart wrenching scene. After that, the event is replayed twice from different perspectives. Secondly and lastly, is the length. It’s an extremely compelling story, but there are more than a few lulls.
I give The Last Duel a B+. As unsettling as the subject matter is, it’s still a well told story with great direction and performances. If you’re looking for a dramatic period piece to transport you to the medieval era, look no further! Happy Watching!

“Can this man, do nothing but evil to me?”
Good review. I loved this movie. It was definitely a bit too long, but I thought that the movie’s story structure was very creative and the acting (overall) was terrific, especially Comer.
