Mini Motorways is a challenging and fun traffic simulator from developer Dinosaur Polo Club. With a city’s road network in your hands, create a bustling metropolis and see how long you can keep it running! Let’s consider the pros and cons of Mini Motorways…
Pros: Firstly, the gameplay is extremely fun, bordering on addicting. You start with a set number of roads and unlock various other structures weekly (bridges, highways, tunnels) as your city expands! And there’s something oh so satisfying about watching different colored cars use your roads to commute to their corresponding buildings! Secondly, although it’s single player, you can compete with players around the world by seeing how you stack up on the leaderboards of each map. In addition to the 12 fixed maps are a catalogue of rotating daily and weekly maps. It’s small touches like this that add variety and make this game all the more enjoyable. Lastly, the color palette is easy on the eyes and the responsive soundtrack helps set the casual tone. Additionally, there is a light and dark mode, and even a color blind option, making this game more accessible for a wide range of players.
Cons: It’s all fun and games until you run into traffic! And trust me, it’s not a matter of “if”, it’s a matter of “when”. Of course this isn’t really a negative because it adds to the challenge, but it might be good to know going in. For instance, I’m a decent puzzle solver, but I ranked bottom 5% on my first playthrough. However, once you get past the slight learning curve, this might turn into your favorite time sink! Lastly, there’s no overarching narrative, your goal is to simply accumulate points. A worthwhile purpose indeed, but it may get repetitive once you’ve run through each map a few times.
I give Mini Motorways a solid A! The PC version is flawless fun, but playing the app on anything smaller than a tablet may leave you frustrated. Tap into your inner city planner and try to avoid congestion at all costs! Happy Gaming!
