The Lost City is an action rom-com about a reclusive writer (Sandra Bullock) who is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Daniel Radcliff) to help find an ancient treasure. It’s up to her novel’s cover model and determined manager to rescue her from an unhappy ending. Let’s consider the pros and cons of The Lost City…
Pros: Firstly, Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum have fantastic chemistry. Not only are they fantastic actors, but this movie allows them to improvise and show off their comedic timing. Secondly, although it’s mostly a surface level comedy, it does send a positive message about not judging a book by its cover. I think this theme of discovering what’s under the surface is important, because there’s honestly not much else to chew on here.
Cons: I think this movie accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, which is to be a light and family fun adventure. Unfortunately, that means the stakes are pretty low and the plot is very predictable. Secondly, as funny as some moments are, other jokes are cringey at best. If you’re a fan of Bullock or Tatum I wouldn’t worry about it, but if you think their humor is bland then you might not have as much fun.
I give The Lost City a B. It’s an exciting rom-com with likable characters and lots of funny moments! The comedy might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re up for an adventure you might be pleasantly surprised. Happy Watching!
