Don’t Look Up (2021)

Don’t Look Up is a sociopolitical satire showing us how our scientists and elected officials might react to a planet killing meteor heading towards earth. Adam McKay writes and directs this frustratingly hilarious dramedy. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Don’t Look Up…

Pros: Firstly, the casting director deserves a medal for this lineup. Jonah Hill and Jennifer Lawrence are hilarious, but Leonardo DiCaprio is the glue that holds this wacky movie together. Secondly is the hilariously poignant writing and the polished direction. The story cleverly incorporates elements from media, political and scientific communities, which we’ve become all too familiar with recently. Overall, this movie looks great, is full of laughs, and might give you a new perspective on climate change!

Cons: Although a lot of humor is injected into the story, it’s still addressing some divisive and serious topics. For that reason, it’s difficult for me to get on board with the tone of this movie. I can look back and laugh in hindsight, but in the moment, it’s extremely frustrating to watch everyone dismiss qualified scientists so easily! However, I believe this is the exact movie McKay wanted to make, and I think my reaction is the intended one.

I give Don’t Look Up a B+. Although the tone is a bit jarring, it’s a well constructed commentary on our current society. It’s not a movie for everyone, but it’s still worth a watch for the fantastic cast! Happy Watching!
