Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a romantic comedy about a distressed musician who takes a vacation to forget about his ex. After arriving in Hawaii, Peter quickly learns that his ex and her new celebrity boyfriend are staying at the same resort! Let’s consider the pros and cons of Forgetting Sarah Marshall…

Pros: Firstly, the cast as a whole is hilarious, but Jason Segel carries this movie in the goofy and endearing way that only he could. Mila Kunis is also especially great, but Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, and Bill Hader also leave big impressions in their small supporting roles. Secondly, I love the Hawaiian setting! This movie isn’t just a treat for your funny bone, but it’s also gorgeous to look at. Lastly, is the theme of taking a chance on something new. At the beginning of the movie, Peter is depressed, unmotivated, and unwilling to move on. It’s when he begins to focus on himself that he’s able to complete his musical and find a new love interest.

Cons: The idea that 2 recently separated people would not only choose the same week to take a vacation, but would choose the same resort is almost enough to pull you out of the movie. Segel’s character jokes “I’m here to murder you”, whenever the two cross paths in Hawaii, but that’s more believable than it being a random coincidence! However, there is a hint dropped early on that Sarah had that destination in mind when they were together, so I guess the writers covered their bases. Aside from plot convenience, there are a few quick flashes of male and female nudity. It definitely adds to the comedic effect of scenes, but it’s also probably not the comedy to watch with young children! You’ve been warned, or persuaded, I’m not judging.

I give Forgetting Sarah Marshall a solid A! It’s a hilariously relatable movie, with a stacked cast, and beautiful setting. Whether you’re in your honeymoon phase, going through a breakup, or anywhere in between, this movie will make you laugh out loud! Happy Watching.
