Free Guy (2021)

Free Guy is about a non-player character (NPC) that becomes self aware and starts playing in the brutal open world game he belongs to! Videogames and movies aren’t always the best combination, but you might be surprised! Let’s consider the pros and cons of Free Guy…

Pros: Firstly, Ryan Reynolds remains as both a confident and charismatic lead. He carries this movie with the help of a hilarious cast and a few well placed cameos. Secondly, the fast pace and quirky dialogue constantly keeps you engaged and makes the runtime feel much shorter than it is. Lastly is the plot. While not perfect, I appreciate that there is an explanation for Blue Shirt Guy’s unusual behavior. I also think the inclusion of actual YouTubers and Twitch streamers in certain segments is a nice touch that adds authenticity to the premise.

Cons: Although I love Taika Waititi as a person, his character in this movie is like nails on a chalkboard. Not only does the main antagonist come across as a petulant, entitled child, but in the end he faces hardly any consequences! I suppose this demonstrates how the real life protagonists prioritize their intellectual property over profits, but it’s slightly anticlimactic. Overall however, the ending doesn’t detract from the thrill ride that is this movie!

I give Free Guy an A-. It’s fun, funny and packed with action! It’s like The Truman Show meets Ready Player One if you’re looking for something to compare it to. This was a pleasant surprise for me, I definitely recommend it. Happy Watching!
