Jumanji (1995)

Jumanji is a classic 90’s movie based on the 1981 fantasy children’s picture book of the same name. The story follows a magical and exceptionally dangerous board game that wreaks havoc on all those who play! Let’s consider the pros and cons of Jumanji…

Pros: Firstly, the premise of this movie allows for a lot of excitement! Although it’s very contrived, if you’re able to buy into this magical board game, you’re in for a wild ride! Secondly, are a few of the performances. Robin Williams is a comedic powerhouse who effortlessly sells his “fish out of water” character, and a young Kirsten Dunst also proves to be a capable child actor. Lastly, is the overall theme of confronting your fears and persevering through teamwork. Every dice roll brings almost certain chaos, but it’s up to the players to finish the game and restore order!

Cons: Although Robin Williams is prominently featured, I can’t help but feel that he’s underused in this role. Williams is known for his ability to adlib, but most of the dialogue feels super scripted. It sounds like a silly thing to criticize, but it’s a shame to waste that kind of talent. Lastly, is the CGI which has not held up well. The lion and plant creature are done practically, so those look okay, but the monkeys and stampede are a whole other story. Overall, the dated CGI doesn’t detract too much from the movie.

I give Jumanji a B-! It’s a fun adventure the whole family will enjoy and Robin Williams is as endearing as ever. If you’re looking for something short and light, this is a good movie to throw on! Happy Watching!
