Mank (2020)

Mank follows critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane. With extraordinary talent both on screen and behind the camera, it’s no wonder this movie racked up an impressive ten Oscar nominations, winning in two categories! Let’s consider the pros and cons of Mank…

Pros: Firstly, David Fincher’s direction allows this movie to flow exceptionally well. From the engaging cast and verbose dialogue to the classic Hollywood setting, Mank is a period piece for the ages! Equally fantastic is Gary Oldman’s performance as the titular character. His accent and mannerisms are impeccable throughout, not to mention the gifted supporting actors around him. Lastly, the original score is fitting for the swing and jazz era and helps solidify the old-timey Hollywood feel.

Cons: The black and white aesthetic is a double edge sword for this movie. Although it adds tremendous context to the setting, it doesn’t pop like any other color movie would. It’s an intentional creative choice that definitely sets this movie apart, but it’s a bit dull for my taste. That’s really the only negative criticism I have for this movie. Overall it’s exceptionally well made!

I give Mank an A-. It’s a period piece that will enthrall you with it’s witty dialogue and eccentric characters. If you’re a movie lover, this biopic is a must see! Happy Watching!
