Midnight Mass (2021)

Midnight Mass is a Netflix limited TV series, from the same mind who brought us The Haunting of Bly Manor and Hill House. An isolated island community experiences miraculous events and frightening omens after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Midnight Mass…

Pros: As is the case with the previously mentioned shows, the directing here is phenomenal! When you see wide setup shots turn into intimate closeups without any scene transitions, you know there’s some talent behind the camera. Equally as talented are the actors who are also giving convincing performances throughout these long cuts. Last but not least is the “Angel” creature design that will forever haunt my nightmares. What I like about Mike Flanagan’s shows is that he initially shrouds his creations in mystery, but eventually shows them off in all their glory.

Cons: As much as I appreciate the direction and acting, the pacing is a little slow. It feels like the writers wanted every character to have a monologue whether or not it fit the situation. Secondly, although the plot allows for big scares and twists, there are lingering questions surrounding the “Angel” and the priest that aren’t ever adequately answered.

I give Midnight Mass a B+. The suspense is palpable and the story is shocking and horrifying. It’s slow in some sections, but overall this is a great show to kick off spooky season! Happy Watching!
