Prey (2022)

Prey is an offshoot of the Predator franchise in which a Comanche woman and her tribe battles the alien hunter! Absent modern tools and technology, Naru must use her skills and wits to survive this intergalactic threat. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Prey..

Pros: Firstly, Amber Midthunder gives an outstanding performance as Naru and does an incredible job considering she’s in 99% of this movie. I appreciate that she’s able to communicate many of her thoughts nonverbally, giving the audience just enough insight to understand her actions. I think the casting director did a wonderful job picking not only her, but her entire tribe. Secondly, the Predator is as lethal and menacing as ever! The CGI is great although possibly overused, but I like that we see it getting injured by the wildlife in several scenes. It’s as if the monster is working its way up to the most dangerous game, which I thouroughly enjoyed. Lastly, you might not expect above average cinematography in a Predator film, but I’m telling you the setting is gorgeous!

Cons: Firstly, at one and a half hours, this movie just isn’t long enough. With so many great elements at play, I felt like many scenes would benefit from having more time to breath. This is especially the case when it comes to the climactic fight which I think is fantastic, but it’s over before you know it. Lastly, as I mentioned before, the CGI is potentially overused when it comes to the predator’s features. I try not to let external content influence my reviews, but there’s a video showcasing the practical mask that was used, and I think that looks as good if not better than the final product.

I give Prey a B+. It’s an undoubtedly solid entry into the Predator franchise and proof that this creature feature isn’t going anywhere. Hop in the time machine that is your preferred method of viewing and prepare to be transported to the 1700’s! Happy Watching!
