The Boys is an Amazon Original show that takes a uniquely gritty look at what a world with Superheroes might look like. After one man’s girlfriend is tragically killed by a “hero”, he learns that collateral damage is an all too common occurrence and Vaught, the superhero agency, has a serious accountability problem. Let’s consider the pros and cons of The Boys…
Pros: Firstly, I like the concept of this show because it’s exactly how I would expect Heroes and their handlers to operate in the real world. Of course it’s impossible to say, but while Marvel and DC are glorifying their masked and caped vigilantes, The Boys is doing the opposite. These heroes are just as flawed and selfish as normal people, the only difference is that they can back up their desires with a lot of firepower! Secondly is the acting which is great all around. Antony Star is particularly terrifying as Homelander, the Superman knockoff. There are plenty more performances worth pointing out here, but I definitely want to mention Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell. He plays a fantastic straight man opposite all of the eccentric and bizarre characters around him.
Cons: Although I don’t mind the excessive gore and violence, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. I wouldn’t recommend watching this show with your parents or your children, so in that respect, The Boys has a fairly narrow target audience. However if blood and sexual themes don’t turn you off, this might be right up your alley!
I give The Boys a solid A! It has an exorbitant amount of sex and gore, but it’s a fantastic concept that allows for incredible visual story telling! Buckle in because this is not your parent’s superhero show! Happy Watching!
