Pros: Firstly, the Russo brothers know how to put together a thrilling action movie! The large scale set pieces and well choreographed action scenes definitely elevate this movie over others in the genre. The cast is also stacked with Ryan Gosling as the badass lead and Chris Evans turning in an particularly maniacal performance as the rogue assassin. Ana de Armas and Billy Bob Thornton also play strong supporting roles and are worth a mention. Lastly, the special effects are above average. The explosions look real, and the shootouts put the audience right in the action!
Cons: As fun and exciting as the action sequences are, there’s also several spy tropes throughout. As a result, the story is fairly predictable and doesn’t veer off from the cliché blueprint. Lastly is the writing, which could have used some refining. I love quips as much as the next guy, but there could have been more dialogue that wasn’t just one liners or exposition.
I give The Gray Man a solid B. There’s a lot of mindless action overall, but the crisp direction, star power, and awesome set pieces make it wild ride! If you’re looking for something fun with good action, then this is a pretty good fit. Happy Watching!
