The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is the adaptation of Douglas Adams’ novel of the same name, following the destruction of earth and a quest for the meaning of life! This especially unique sci-fi adventure will have you laughing out loud and bewildered throughout. Let’s consider the pros and cons of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy…

Pros: Firstly, Stephen Fry’s ongoing narration does a lot of the comedic heavy lifting in this movie. The dry British humor is inescapable overall, but the narration in particular is used to great effect. Secondly, this movie’s small cast is stacked with phenomenal actors! Everyone jibes well together and gets an opportunity to flex their comedic chops. Lastly, is the PG tone, which keeps it light and fun, even when dealing with it’s more serious themes.

Cons: Although there is literal world building involved, the plot is a bit of a jumbled mess. And try as the Hitchhiker’s Guide might, none of the universe’s rules are ever clearly established. This leads to many convenient plot points that push the story forward, but aren’t necessarily earned. Secondly, almost every character in this movie is one-note. You have the depressed robot Marvin, the overly idiotic captain Zaphod, the quirky alien Ford Prefect, and the list goes on. Even Arthur Dent, the main protagonist, acts like a fly on the wall and only does what he’s told. Sacrifices were undoubtedly made in order to adapt this story, but overall it sticks it’s landing.

I give The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy a B. It’s a family friendly sci-fi adventure movie with a stacked cast, wacky plot, and unapologetically punchy British humor! And with a runtime under 2 hours, it’s a breeze to get through. Happy Watching!
