Your Highness is a stoner comedy with a fun cast and good intentions, but overall it’s quite ridiculous. Set in a medieval kingdom, a bride-to-be is kidnapped by an evil wizard and must be brought to justice! Let’s consider the pros and cons of Your Highness…
Pros: Firstly, the chemistry between Franco and McBride is one redeeming quality of this movie. Although their performances are absurdly over the top, they compliment each other hilariously. Secondly, the handful of special effects in this movie are actually really cool! A few of the magical battle scenes almost feel out of place because of how polished they look compared to the rest of the movie. Lastly, this movie is a cool hour and forty minutes long. That’s one of the better things about it, so take from that what you will.
Cons: Firstly, not even Natalie Portman’s presence could salvage this bonkers movie. And that’s saying a lot because she’s a professional and gives a solid performance here. Secondly, the anachronistic script and improvisation is jarring and persists throughout the movie. It’s safe to say you will either find it hilarious or not at all funny. However, I think it’s a good idea to know what you’re getting into with this movie. As I noted in the introduction, this is a stoner comedy. If that’s is not your type of humor, that’s completely understandable. You can skip this movie and no one would blame you for it.
I give Your Highness a B-. It has it’s moments, but overall it’s ridiculous for ridiculousness sake. If you’re looking for an action comedy that you can shut your brain off for, this is a good option. Happy Watching!
